The extraordinary Oscar-shortlisted documentary Attica uncovers the true story of the notorious prison uprising 50 years ago – and the subsequent killings. It’s a shocking, powerful film, and I spoke with director Stanley Nelson and co-director Traci Curry about it. Christiane Amanpour Facebook

Pamela DeLano My uncle, a now retired prison guard, was called in to that riot. He has never spoken one word about it to anyone other than to tell his wife where he was going that day. To say that he was traumatized by what he saw there is an understatement.

Attica Prison Uprising: 50th Anniversary — a community-created list from Rattusnorvegicus Chicago Public Library BiblioCommons

"From Sept. 9 to 13, 1971, prisoners took control of the Attica Correctional Facility in the most well-known prison uprising of the 20th century. They made a series of demands to prison administrators and held about 40 people as hostages. Their demands were included in a Manifesto that began: We, the men of Attica Prison, have been committed to the New York State Department of Corrections by the people of...

Visiting Attica: SRLP attempts to break barriers for our incarcerated loved ones SRLP (Sylvia Rivera Law Project)

I visited Attica Correctional Facility on July 12, a hot day even for Western New York. Despite how many times I have seen images of Attica Correctional Facility, the first time approaching it was startling. The facade is a huge wall that wraps around the entire complex almost like a child’s drawing of a castle.

New Year’s in Prison is Different, Especially with a Long Sentence The Marshall Project

Five...four…three...two...one... Happy New Year! Balls drop. Confetti flitters. Fireworks burst. We dance, drunk-sing our favorite songs, and kiss our favorite lover. The year has begun — unless you’re in prison. On the outside, my New Year’s Eves were typical: My friends and I did the countdown.

In 2021, after 34 years of living in solitary confinement in New York state prisons, William Blake was released into general population. Solitary Watch first encountered Blake, now 60, back in 2013, when we published his essay “A Sentence Worse Than Death.” The essay received more than half a million hits on this site alone, and has been widely reprinted and translated into several languages.

On September 9, 1971, in response to brutal living conditions and oppressive policies, prisoners rose up and took control of New York's Attica prison. The prisoners held more than 30 prison staff hostage, taking care to protect them from additional harm, while prisoner representatives sought to negotiate with state leaders.
